This study investigated the relationship between sleep duration and academic performance among university students. A questionnaire was administered to 412 undergraduates, and the responses were analysed using multiple regression. The implications of the results are discussed in the following chapters.

Undergraduates who slept fewer than six hours per night reported a grade point average 0.31 points lower than those sleeping seven to eight hours, after adjustment for weekly study hours and part-time employment. The estimate is based on a questionnaire survey of 412 undergraduates analysed by multiple regression.

This study has several limitations. The sample was small and was drawn from a single university, the design was cross-sectional, and the measures were self-reported and may therefore be inaccurate. For these reasons the findings should be interpreted with caution and cannot be generalised.

Because participants were recruited from a single university, the estimates describe this student population rather than undergraduates nationally, and replication across institutions is the natural next step. The cross-sectional design supports an association rather than a causal direction, and self-reported sleep duration carries measurement error that would attenuate the observed association rather than produce it — so the direction of the effect reported here is unlikely to be an artefact of these two limitations.
